One Hour Makes a Difference This Earth Day

Forty years ago it started as a grassroots effort to walk to clean the streets of trash. Today, Earth Day is a special day to learn how to take care of the earth. This year, Zinn Insurance has started a grassroots effort - inviting Lebanon residents to help clean the main streets of the City of Lebanon on April 20, 2010-Earth Day. An Earth Day Clean Up is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. at the Lebanon Farmers Market.

Click here to register online or

download the registration form and fax it to 717-272-4145.

Participants must pre-register by April 7, 2010.

According to ZINN Insurance Principal Greg Zinn, Zinn Insurance has collaborated with the City of Lebanon, The Community of Lebanon Association (CLA), the Lebanon Valley Chamber of Commerce, and the Bollen Air-to-Ground Range, PA Air National Guard, to sponsor a one-hour litter pick up in the community for Earth Day.

“We are planning to pick up litter for one hour in a community effort to beautify and enhance our downtown,” said Zinn. “I know personally, while my family is in the Market, I tend to walk the parking lot picking up the litter. I thought--with Earth Day in April--why not see if we can build on that . . . and make it a community effort! After all, together--we can make a difference.”

All the sponsors are assisting to make a difference. The city is mapping routes where litter will be picked up and getting trash bags--two colors--to separate trash from recyclables. Everyone will be given a bright Neon Green T Shirt to wear to cover clothes as well as latex gloves provided by the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Following the participants will be a truck sponsored by Bollen Air-to-Ground Range, PA Air National Guard to collect the litter bags. Afterwards, the groups return to the Farmers Market to take a box lunch, provided by the CLA, The Original Chili Dog, and Sweet Sensations.

“We are only planning this to last one hour, as we know how busy people are,” said Zinn. “Afterwards, if you wear your Green T Shirt to the Lebanon Expo, the Chamber is holding a GO GREEN EXPO, you will get free admission.”

According to Chamber representative Peggy Kreiser, the Go Green Expo, will be filled with alternative energy systems, green and organic foods, energy efficient vehicles, Energy Star appliances, composting and recycling services and products, green-certified architectural and construction services, energy efficient lighting systems, landscaping services, home heating systems, “green” household furnishings and items, water retention systems and supplies, scooters and bicycles, energy-conserving controls and systems and many other “green” products.

“This is the first year for the Go Green Expo, which will be held on Tuesday, April 20. from 8:00a .m. to 7:00 p.m., said Kreiser.

City of Lebanon Mayor Sherrie Capello is excited about the event and will have an Earth Day Proclamation ready to present to ZINN before the Earth Day participants take to their routes.

“This is a great day to take care of our City and our planet,” said Capello. “I know that the city, our wonderful Green Belt and keeping our environment clean is an important agenda item to me--one that is very close to my heart.”

Lt. Colonel Blake Uhl, Commander of the Bollen Air-to-Ground Range, says this event is another way that the National Guard can support the local community.

“Our military personnel always stand ready to serve their country and the Commonwealth. Being able to serve the local community is just as important because this is our home, too,” said Uhl.

Many other businesses have donated to make this event a success including: Arthur Funk and Sons, Construction Services, The Original Chili Dog, and PA Embroidery.

ZINN Announces Membership in C12 Group

To support my professional and personal growth, ZINN recently joined C12 Group in Philadelphia. C12 is comprised of business owners and CEO’s who strive to lead their companies with excellence while integrating their Christian faith in their practices and purpose. In addition to great business counsel, C12 has been a great resource to encourage and support my personal efforts in integrating my Christian faith into my work while leading our firm.

The C12 Group meets monthly as a special ‘sabbatical day’ in business to enable the disciplined lifelong learning, feedback, accountability and prayer that contributes to the program’s intensity and proven long-term success (see ‘The C12 Difference’ at http://www.c12group.com/the-c12-difference/) These high-impact sessions are designed to motivate and hold accountable Christian business leaders through focused interaction with a seasoned peer business leader and board of advisors. The monthly meeting gives me a helpful and challenging framework to work “on” the business -not just in the business.

Founded in 1992 by Buck Jacobs, a dedicated Christian, author and CEO, the C12 Group is based in North Carolina and currently serves 50 U.S. metro markets. The C12 Group in Philadelphia was formed in 2008 and represents C12’s expansion into Pennsylvania. The professional growth, coupled with the personal relationships, that I have made have been invaluable. I look forward to continued growth and blessing as I continue my journey in C12 and my work at ZINN.

Avoiding Collisions with Deer

Sharing the road with deer can be hazardous to your health. Each year many drivers and their passengers are injured or killed in collisions involving deer. While many wild animals cross roadways, deer present the most frequent hazard. As rural areas continue to develop and deer populations continue to increase, vehicle-deer crashes will continue to increase.

With the threat of collisions with deer ever present, drivers and their passengers must be properly restrained in safety belts to help avoid serious injury. While deer collisions happen year-round, the majority of collisions occur during the Fall, when deer are in their mating season and hunting season is open, and in the Spring, during birthing season. The times of highest risk for collisions are around dusk and sunrise. Remember, safety belts are the best defense in any collision.

To help avoid collisions with deer, the following defensive driving tips should be followed:
Be especially alert for deer in the Fall and Spring, and around sunrise and sunset.
Watch for “deer crossing” signs as they are posted where deer have been known to cross the roadway.
Don’t depend on mechanical devices, such as deer whistles; tests indicate that they do not work.
Maintain a safe speed; don’t overdrive your headlights.
Use your high-beams, when there is no oncoming traffic, to help visibility.
Scan the sides of the road to spot deer.
If you see one deer, expect that others are nearby - deer are herd animals and rarely travel alone.
If you see a deer on the road, slow down and blow your horn. Flashing your headlights may confuse the deer.
If deer are on the side of the road, assume they will bolt out in front of you and drive slowly past them.
Don’t try to swerve to avoid hitting a deer. Abruptly turning the vehicle may make you lose control and result in a more severe accident than hitting the deer.
If you do collide with a deer, you should take the following steps, if possible:
Turn on your emergency flashers.
Move your vehicle off the traveled portion of the roadway.
Contact the police to report the collision.
Do not go near the deer unless you are sure it is dead, as it may become violent if it is scared or injured.
If the deer is in the roadway, only try to remove it if you are sure it is safe to do so.

Zinn recently began offering clients MyWave®, an online comprehensive risk management resource to assist with their risk management and communications efforts. A customized internet portal is created, giving clients direct access to a risk management resource library, a peer-to-peer community exchange between a national network of MyWave users, insurance service tools and an OSHA reference site to maintain client OSHA logs and reference material.

Laserfab, Inc of Lebanon, specializing in precision laser-cut metalwork and fabrication, was an early MyWave installation. In addition to implementing a competitive, industry-specific insurance program for Laserfab, we also implemented MyWave to assist them specifically in their Safety Committee efforts by providing communications to employees and their OSHA compliance needs.

We are really excited about this tool as we strive to become an advocate for our clients beyond simply securing insurance. MyWave is a tangible way we go beyond delivering just insurance coverage, and supporting them in their daily focus on business success.

Raising Awareness of Fragile X Syndrome With US Legislators.

I traveled to Washington DC in February to speak with individual members of Congress and their legislative assistants about issues regarding Fragile X Syndrome. Along with other advocates, I met with legislative assistants from the offices of U.S. Senators Robert Casey and Arlen Specter. I also met directly with U.S. Congressman Tim Holden and Jim Gerlach.

While in Washington DC, I met with other Fragile X Advocates from all over the United States with one common goal: to secure the resources necessary to find more effective treatments and ultimately a cure for Fragile X.

My husband Luke and I are parents of two daughters with Fragile X Syndrome. Fragile X Syndrome is the leading cause of inherited mental impairment and the leading known genetic cause of autism. Individuals with the full mutation of Fragile X Syndrome can face many challenges, including mental impairment (mild to profound), sensory processing difficulties, behavior issues, developmental disabilities, and speech and language delay.

Along with advocating in Washington DC, I organize an annual Walk For Fragile X in which money raised is donated to the National Fragile X Foundation and the FRAXA Organization to help with education, awareness and funding for research.

More info on Fragile X Syndrome can be found at www.fragilex.org

Zinn/Chubb team up to insure 18th Centry Stone Mansion

A historic 18th century stone mansion, located in Western Berks County, Pennsylvania, was originally built in 1784. It’s been fully restored to its original design and furnished with period antiques of the revolutionary war era. The property was recently featured in the magazine Antiques, the premiere collectors magazine that has been published since 1922.

Our relationship with the mansion, began many years ago when Joel Zinn (an antiques collector himself) met and forged both a personal and business relationship with the owners. The insurance needs of a historic property with original antiques and fine arts are very unique. Zinn worked with Chubb insurance company to provide the insurance needed for the unique construction and craftsmanship. Chubb specializes in insuring historic and high value homes that have premium artisan construction providing coverages and services that will assure that the property can be restored to its original construction without compromise in building materials, craftsmanship and integrity.

Chubb provides a highly detailed building appraisal as part of its client service. The appraisal accurately values the reconstruction cost of the historic or premiere home using factors that account for existing construction to establishing proper insurance limits and account for the home’s proper valuation.

Chubb is the premiere home insurer in the world. To learn more about the features and benefits of Chubb’s Masterpiece insurance offering please contact us.
